The deciding factor is whether the tooth is restorable
The dentist is asking three things. Is there enough sound tooth above the gum to hold a crown? Is the root intact, with no vertical crack? Is the supporting bone and gum healthy enough? If the answer to all three is yes, the tooth can usually be saved.
If the root is split lengthways, or the tooth has broken below the bone, or gum disease has destroyed most of its support, a root canal will not give a lasting result. In those cases, extraction is the honest recommendation and a root canal first would be money wasted.
The case for saving the tooth
A natural tooth stays connected to the jaw through its ligament, which senses bite force and keeps the bone around it working. Neither an implant nor a bridge can reproduce this fully.
The treatment is shorter. A root canal and crown can be done in a few weeks, against three to six months for an implant to heal, and there is no surgery. It is also cheaper. A root canal and crown together typically total ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 in Lucknow in 2026, while extraction and an implant run ₹25,000 to ₹60,000, as set out on our root canal cost in Lucknow page.
The root canal route also keeps the implant option open. A tooth that fails later can still be extracted and replaced, usually without having closed any doors.
The case for extracting and placing an implant
A tooth with a poor long-term outlook is better replaced than repeatedly repaired. Repeated re-treatments, a crown on a tooth with very little structure, and a tooth with a root fracture all fall into this group.
An implant also avoids the tooth fracture and reinfection risks that follow a root-treated tooth. It does not decay, though the gum and bone around it can still develop infection if it is not cleaned. The implant route is explained on our dental implants page, and a related decision between replacement options is in dental implant vs bridge.
Sometimes the plan is a mix. A root canal is attempted where the tooth has a fair chance, with an honest conversation beforehand about what happens if it fails.
Questions to ask before deciding
Ask the dentist what remains of the tooth, whether the root is cracked, how the gum and bone look on the X-ray, and what the plan is if the tooth fails. A good answer states the realistic odds and the next step, not a promise.
Ask for the complete cost of both routes, including the crown on the root canal route and the crown, abutment and any bone graft on the implant route. Our root canal treatment page explains the first route. When the tooth needs a crown, the steps are in what happens when you get a crown (cap).
Common questions
Which lasts longer, a root canal tooth or an implant?
Both can last many years, and neither has a guaranteed lifespan. A properly restored root-treated tooth and a well-maintained implant often perform comparably. The result depends more on the condition of the tooth, bone and gum, and on cleaning, than on the choice itself.
Can I get an implant instead of a root canal to avoid the pain?
Extraction and implant surgery also involve local anaesthetic and recovery discomfort, and the implant process is longer. Pain is rarely a good reason to choose one over the other. The condition of the tooth should decide.
What if the root canal fails, can I still get an implant?
Usually yes. A failed root-treated tooth can be extracted and replaced, and the root canal does not rule out an implant later. Bone should be assessed with an X-ray or CBCT scan, and a graft may be needed if infection has damaged it.
Is a root canal cheaper than an implant in Lucknow?
Generally yes. In Lucknow in 2026 a root canal with a crown typically totals ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 against ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 for extraction and an implant. Where the tooth is restorable, saving it is usually the cheaper route.
