The first few hours: wait for the numbness to go
Local anaesthetic leaves the lip, cheek and tongue numb for two to four hours, a little longer after lower jaw injections. Eating before feeling returns risks biting your cheek or tongue without noticing, or scalding yourself with hot tea or dal.
Cool water is fine. Once feeling is back, begin with something light. If the appointment was long and you have not eaten, plan something soft to eat after it.
What is easy on the tooth for the first few days
Soft, lukewarm food that needs little chewing: dal and rice, khichdi, idli, curd and rice, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, porridge, soft chapati dipped in dal, ripe banana, and smoothies without seeds. Soups and lukewarm milk are also fine.
Chew on the side opposite the treated tooth. The ligament around the root is tender for two to four days, as described in root canal side effects, and biting on it prolongs the soreness.
What to avoid, and why it matters
Hard food such as nuts, raw carrot, apple bites, ice, chana and hard crusts. Sticky food such as toffee, chewing gum and chewy sweets. Very hot or very cold food on the treated side, which can irritate the tender tissue. Spicy food can aggravate a sore gum.
The reason is the temporary filling. Until the tooth has its permanent restoration, it is weak and leaks, and a fracture at this stage can cost the tooth. Chewing on the temporary should wait until the permanent filling or crown is done, which is explained in do I need a crown after a root canal.
When can you eat normally again
For a back tooth, be careful until the crown is fitted, which should be within weeks. Once the permanent restoration is in place and the tenderness has gone, you can chew normally on that side. A front tooth restored with a bonded filling should still avoid biting hard things directly with it, such as nuts or sugarcane.
Keep brushing and flossing normally around the tooth, gently. If the tooth is still painful to bite on after a week, or pain worsens after day three, contact the clinic. Facial swelling or fever needs care the same day. The full procedure is in root canal treatment steps, and our root canal treatment page covers what to expect.
Common questions
Can I drink tea or coffee after a root canal?
Wait until the numbness has worn off, then have it lukewarm rather than hot. A numb mouth cannot judge temperature, so a hot drink can burn the lip or tongue. After that, tea and coffee are fine.
Can I eat rice and roti after a root canal?
Yes, once the numbness has gone. Soft rice with dal or curd is ideal. Soft roti torn into small pieces and chewed on the other side is fine. Avoid hard crusts, parathas that are crisp at the edge, and anything you must bite hard into.
How long should I avoid chewing on the treated tooth?
Until the permanent filling or crown is placed and the tooth no longer feels tender. For most people that means a few days of tenderness and then a wait of a couple of weeks for the crown. Your dentist will advise on timing.
Can I eat spicy food after a root canal?
Mild spice is usually fine once the numbness has gone, but very spicy food can irritate a sore gum around the tooth. Choose milder food for the first two or three days, and avoid chewing on the treated side.
Is it safe to take painkillers with food after a root canal?
Paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the label is usually enough, and taking ibuprofen with food reduces stomach upset. Avoid ibuprofen with a stomach ulcer, kidney disease or asthma that reacts to it, and check with a doctor if pregnant or on blood thinners.
