What RCT means on your dental notes
If your dentist writes RCT, or advises an RCT, they mean root canal treatment. You may also see RCT after a tooth number, such as RCT 46, meaning that tooth has been or will be root treated. Some people also see the term RCT in other medical fields, where it means randomised controlled trial, but in dentistry it almost always means root canal treatment.
Inside every tooth is a soft pulp running down narrow canals in the roots. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach it. Once the pulp is infected it cannot heal by itself.
Why RCT is done
The usual reasons are a toothache that wakes you at night, lingering pain to hot or cold, a gum boil, or swelling. Sometimes there is no pain at all and the infection is found on an X-ray. Without treatment the infection can spread to the bone and face. Spreading facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing needs same-day care, and a hospital emergency department if breathing or swallowing is affected.
The alternative to RCT is usually removing the tooth. Our guide on whether a root canal hurts covers what the procedure feels like.
What RCT involves and what comes after
Under local anaesthetic the dentist opens the tooth, removes the pulp, shapes and cleans the canals, and fills them. Some teeth are finished in one visit and others take more; see single sitting root canal for how that decision is made.
A root-treated tooth is more brittle, so back teeth usually need a crown, as explained in do I need a crown after a root canal. A dentist who focuses on RCT may be called an endodontist. The full process is on our root canal treatment page.
Common questions
Is RCT the same as a root canal?
Yes. RCT is the short form of root canal treatment, and people also just say root canal.
Does RCT always need a crown?
Not always, but back teeth usually do because they take heavy biting forces. Front teeth with plenty of healthy structure left may need only a filling. Your dentist will advise.
Can RCT be done in one visit?
Sometimes. It depends on the tooth, the amount of infection and how the canals look on the X-ray. Some teeth need two or more visits.
