PFM Full Form: Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown

Short answer

PFM stands for porcelain fused to metal. A PFM crown (or cap) has an inner metal shell for strength, covered by a layer of tooth-coloured porcelain for appearance. It has been used for decades to cover damaged or root-treated teeth and to anchor bridges. It is strong, but the metal edge can show at the gum line over time.

PFM crown full form and structure

A PFM crown is porcelain fused to metal. The dentist reshapes the tooth, takes an impression or scan, and a laboratory builds a thin metal cap that fits over it. Porcelain is then fired onto the outside of the metal and shaped and coloured to resemble a natural tooth.

The crown is then cemented over the prepared tooth. A temporary crown is worn in the meantime; see temporary crown for how to look after it.

Pros and cons of PFM crowns

The metal core makes PFM crowns strong and well suited to back teeth and bridges. They have a long track record and are often a more affordable option than newer all-ceramic materials.

The downsides are cosmetic and biological. The metal can leave a dark line at the gum edge if the gum recedes, the metal blocks some light so the crown can look less natural than all-ceramic, and the porcelain layer can chip. Some people with metal allergies need to tell the dentist beforehand.

PFM vs other crown types

Which crown suits a tooth depends on where it sits, how hard you bite, whether you grind, and your budget. Our guides on types of dental crowns and zirconia vs metal ceramic crowns compare them side by side, and tooth cap explains the terminology. For costs, see dental crown cost, and for the treatment itself, root canal treatment pages cover when a crown is advised.

Common questions

Is PFM the same as a metal ceramic crown?

Yes. Porcelain fused to metal and metal ceramic refer to the same type of crown.

How long does a PFM crown last?

Many last ten years or more with good brushing, flossing and regular check-ups, though it varies with the tooth, your bite and habits such as grinding.

Why does my PFM crown show a dark line?

That is usually the metal edge showing where the gum has receded. It is a cosmetic issue and can be discussed with your dentist.
