What single sitting actually means
The mechanical work of a root canal, removing the infected pulp, shaping the canals, disinfecting them and sealing them, can be completed in one long appointment or split across two or three shorter ones. In the multi-visit approach the canals are dressed with calcium hydroxide between visits, which continues disinfecting while the tooth is temporarily sealed.
The clinical debate was never about whether one visit is possible. It was about whether that inter-visit dressing period improves the outcome. The weight of evidence says that in teeth without active drainage, it does not.
When one visit is appropriate
The canal anatomy is accessible and can be fully shaped and disinfected in the time available. The tooth is not actively discharging pus. The patient can comfortably remain open for the length of the appointment, typically sixty to ninety minutes. The clinic has magnification, apex location and rotary instrumentation, because doing the whole procedure in one visit demands that each step is done well the first time.
For a straightforward front tooth or premolar with a single or twin canal, this describes most cases.
When it should be split
Active suppuration. If pus is draining from the canal, sealing the tooth the same day traps it. The canal is dressed and left open to settle first.
Severe acute infection with swelling. The priority is drainage and antibiotics, not completion.
Complex anatomy. Sharply curved molar canals, calcified canals or a re-treatment case take longer than one sitting can safely accommodate.
Patient factors. Jaw problems, a strong gag reflex, or simply not tolerating a long appointment are legitimate reasons to split it, and no clinician should push against them for the sake of a single visit.
The part that matters more than the visit count
Root canal success is determined by how completely the canal system is disinfected and sealed, and by whether the tooth is properly restored afterwards. The most common cause of a failed root canal is not the number of visits. It is a tooth left in a temporary filling for months, or a back tooth never crowned, which fractures or leaks and reinfects.
A back tooth that has had a root canal is brittle and needs a crown. If a quote covers the root canal and not the crown, the treatment is not finished at the end of it.
Common questions
Is single sitting root canal as successful as multiple visits?
Yes, in appropriately selected teeth. Studies comparing single-visit and multi-visit root canal treatment find no significant difference in long-term success. Selection is what matters: teeth with active drainage or complex anatomy do better across two visits.
Does single sitting RCT hurt more?
Post-operative discomfort for a few days is common after root canal treatment regardless of how many visits it took, and the evidence does not show single-visit treatment causing meaningfully more of it. The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic and should not be painful.
How much does single sitting root canal cost in Lucknow?
Root canal treatment in Lucknow costs roughly ₹3,000 to ₹12,000 depending on the tooth, with molars at the upper end. Single-sitting treatment is not necessarily priced differently from multi-visit. The crown that follows on a back tooth adds ₹3,000 to ₹20,000 and should be in the quote.
Do I still need a crown after a single sitting root canal?
On a back tooth, yes. A root-treated molar or premolar has lost internal structure and is significantly more likely to fracture without full cusp coverage. Front teeth with small access cavities can sometimes be restored with a filling alone.
