Tooth replacement

Dental Implant vs Bridge: Which Should You Choose?

Short answer

An implant is usually the better choice for a single missing tooth, because it replaces the root, preserves the jawbone, and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched. A bridge is cheaper upfront and faster, but requires cutting down two healthy teeth and does not stop bone loss at the gap. Where those neighbouring teeth already need crowns, a bridge becomes the reasonable option.

What each one actually is

An implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone in the position the missing root occupied, left to fuse with the bone for three to six months, and then fitted with a crown. It stands alone and touches nothing else.

A bridge spans the gap by joining three crowns together. The two outer crowns are cemented onto the teeth either side, which have to be cut down to make room for them, and the middle unit sits over the gap without touching bone.

The argument for the implant

It preserves the neighbouring teeth. Preparing a tooth for a bridge removes a significant amount of healthy enamel and dentine permanently, and a prepared tooth has a meaningfully higher chance of eventually needing a root canal.

It preserves bone. Jawbone maintains its volume in response to load transmitted through a root. Once a tooth is gone, the bone at that site resorbs, and a bridge does nothing to prevent this because it does not reach the bone. Over a decade the gum under a bridge visibly hollows.

It is cleanable. An implant is flossed like a natural tooth. A bridge is one connected unit and requires threading floss underneath the middle section, which many people stop doing.

The argument for the bridge

It is faster. A bridge is finished in two to three weeks. An implant takes three to six months because the bone has to integrate with the fixture before it can be loaded.

It costs less upfront. In Lucknow a three-unit bridge runs ₹12,000 to ₹50,000 against ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 for a single implant and crown.

It does not depend on bone volume. Where bone has been lost and the patient does not want grafting, a bridge works where an implant would need a graft and a sinus lift first.

It is genuinely the better choice when both neighbouring teeth already carry large fillings or already need crowns. In that case the preparation is not sacrificing healthy tooth, because that tooth was going to be crowned anyway.

The fifteen-year view

The comparison changes when you extend the horizon. A bridge typically needs replacing at ten to fifteen years, and each replacement removes more tooth structure and may end with one of the supporting teeth being lost, at which point the problem is now a two-tooth gap. An implant that integrates successfully has a high survival rate past fifteen years with no effect on its neighbours.

Over that span the total spend often converges, which is why the upfront price difference is a weaker argument than it first appears.

Common questions

Is an implant worth the extra cost over a bridge?

For a single missing tooth with healthy teeth either side, usually yes. The extra cost buys the preservation of two healthy teeth and of the jawbone at the gap. Where the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, that argument disappears and a bridge is a sound choice.

How much does each cost in Lucknow?

A single implant with a crown costs ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 in Lucknow in 2026. A three-unit bridge costs ₹12,000 to ₹50,000, depending on the crown material. Bone grafting, if the implant site needs it, adds ₹8,000 to ₹25,000.

Can I have an implant if the tooth has been missing for years?

Usually yes, but the bone will have resorbed in the intervening period and grafting is more likely to be needed. A CBCT scan measures the remaining bone width and height and settles the question. Long-standing gaps in the upper back jaw often also need a sinus lift.

How long does each take?

A bridge takes two to three weeks across two or three appointments. An implant takes three to six months, most of which is waiting for the bone to integrate with the fixture, with a temporary tooth worn in the interim where appearance matters.
