Dental Implants vs Dentures: Which Should You Choose?

Short answer

Implants are usually better for chewing, comfort and keeping the jawbone, because they are fixed into the bone. Dentures cost far less, need no surgery, and can be made for almost anyone. An overdenture clipped onto two to four implants is the middle route. The right choice depends on how many teeth are missing, your bone, your health and your budget.

What each one is

A denture is a removable set of teeth on a gum-coloured base that rests on the gums. A complete denture replaces every tooth in a jaw. A partial denture fills gaps and clasps onto the teeth you still have. The types are laid out in types of dentures.

Implants are titanium or ceramic roots placed in the bone, topped with a crown, a bridge or a full-arch set of teeth. They are fixed, and they stand on bone, not gum.

Where implants are clearly ahead

Stability and chewing. A denture moves on the gum when you eat and talk, and chewing is noticeably weaker. Implant teeth are fixed and perform much closer to natural teeth. Lower dentures are the ones people find hardest.

Bone. A root loads the jawbone and slows its shrinkage. Under a denture the bone keeps resorbing, so the fit worsens and the face can look more sunken over years.

Convenience. No adhesive, no taking teeth out at night (with a fixed bridge), and no fear of them slipping. Neighbouring teeth are not clasped or loaded.

Where dentures are the sensible choice

Cost and speed. A complete set of dentures for both arches costs ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 in Lucknow in 2026, against ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 for a single implant with a crown. A full arch of implants costs ₹2,00,000 to ₹6,00,000.

No surgery, and no bone requirement. Dentures can be made for people who are not fit for surgery, who smoke heavily, who have uncontrolled diabetes, or who have too little bone and do not want grafting. They are also easier to repair and to change.

Dentures are not a lesser choice for everyone. Many people wear them successfully for years. They need relining every two to four years and a remake every five to ten, so the cost accumulates.

The middle option most people should hear about

An overdenture is a denture that clips onto two to four implants. It captures most of the stability benefit for far less than implants for every tooth, at ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 per arch. It is a particular help for a loose lower denture. Read implant-supported dentures for how it works.

At the other end, a fixed full-arch bridge on four to six implants (the full-arch technique commonly called All-on-4) costs more and needs more bone.

How to decide

Work from the number of teeth missing. One or two: an implant or a bridge, see implant vs bridge. Several: an implant bridge or a partial denture. All of a jaw: a complete denture, an overdenture or a fixed full-arch bridge.

Then bone and health: a scan shows what is possible, and smoking, diabetes and gum disease change the odds. Then budget over the long run, since relines and remakes add up. Dental implants at Redefine Dental and the dentures cost page put both in numbers.

Common questions

Are implants better than dentures?

For stability, chewing and bone preservation, yes. They also cost much more and need surgery and enough bone. Dentures suit people who want a lower cost, cannot have surgery, or prefer a removable option. The middle route is an implant-supported denture.

How much more do implants cost than dentures?

In Lucknow in 2026, a complete denture set for both arches costs ₹8,000 to ₹40,000, while a single implant with a crown is ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. A full arch on implants runs ₹2,00,000 to ₹6,00,000. Dentures also need relines and remakes over time.

Can I switch from dentures to implants later?

Often yes. A scan checks whether enough bone remains, and grafting may be needed if the bone has shrunk. Some people keep their denture and have implants added to anchor it, which is a common first step.

Do dentures cause bone loss?

A denture rests on the gum and does not load the bone as a root does, so the bone underneath keeps shrinking over the years. That is why dentures loosen and need relining. Implants slow this process.

What if I am too old or unwell for implants?

Age alone is not a barrier. What matters is bone, gum health and how well conditions like diabetes are controlled. If implants are unsafe, a well-made denture is a sound choice and can be improved with relines.
