See someone urgently if
- A tooth lost to a knock or accident, where the socket should be assessed promptly
- Teeth becoming loose and being lost one after another, which points to periodontal disease
- A gap where the neighbouring teeth have already visibly tipped or drifted
- Difficulty chewing on one side, which shifts load onto the other and causes further problems
Otherwise, book in the normal way. Call +91 83036 12717.
What causes it
Gum disease
The leading cause of tooth loss in adults, ahead of decay. It is painless until late, which is why teeth are often lost from a mouth that never hurt. If you have lost one tooth this way, the others are under the same threat and the disease needs treating regardless of the replacement plan.
Decay beyond repair
A tooth broken down below the gum, or with a root fracture, cannot be restored. Frequently this follows a root canal that was never crowned, and the tooth split under normal chewing load.
Trauma
A knock during sport or an accident. A tooth knocked out entirely can sometimes be replanted if it reaches a dentist within thirty minutes, stored in milk.
Teeth that never developed
Congenitally missing teeth, most commonly upper lateral incisors and premolars, are more common than people expect and are usually planned for during orthodontic treatment.
What helps before you are seen
Do not wait to plan it
The drift, over-eruption and bone loss all begin within months. A plan made early is cheaper and simpler than the same plan made in three years, even if the treatment itself is deliberately delayed.
Ask about socket preservation at the time of extraction
If a tooth is coming out and you may want an implant later, a graft placed into the socket at the time of extraction preserves bone width. It costs roughly ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 and it can be the difference between a straightforward implant later and one that needs major grafting.
Keep chewing on both sides
Favouring one side loads those teeth and the jaw joint disproportionately, and it accelerates wear on the side doing all the work.
Clean the neighbouring teeth carefully
The surfaces next to a gap are newly exposed and are commonly missed when brushing. They decay more often than the average tooth surface.
How it is treated
Implant, the closest to a natural tooth
A titanium fixture placed into the bone and restored with a crown. It replaces the root, so it maintains the bone, and it does not touch the neighbouring teeth. ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 per tooth in Lucknow, taking three to six months.
Bridge, faster and cheaper upfront
Three crowns joined together, cemented onto the teeth either side, which have to be cut down to receive them. ₹12,000 to ₹50,000 and finished in two to three weeks. It does not stop bone loss at the gap. It is the right choice when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns anyway.
Denture, where many teeth are missing
A removable partial from ₹3,000 in acrylic or ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 with a cast metal framework. Least expensive, replaces many teeth at once, and works where bone volume rules out implants.
Implant-supported overdenture, the middle option
Two to four implants anchoring a denture that clips into place, at ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 per arch. For a lower denture that will not stay put, this is the single most consequential upgrade available and it costs far less than full-arch implants.
Leaving a gap, where that is reasonable
A missing wisdom tooth needs no replacement. A single missing back molar with no opposing tooth to over-erupt is sometimes reasonably left, as a considered decision after examination rather than as a default.
Missing teeth: common questions
What happens if I do not replace a missing tooth?
The teeth either side tip into the gap, the opposing tooth over-erupts because nothing meets it, and the bone at the site resorbs steadily. Chewing shifts to the other side. Each of these makes replacement later more complex and more expensive, and severe tipping can rule out a straightforward implant altogether.
How long can I wait before replacing a missing tooth?
Bone loss begins within months and is fastest in the first year. Drift and over-eruption are slower and vary. There is no fixed deadline, but the cost of waiting is real and compounds, and it is usually paid later as grafting or as orthodontic work to reopen a closed space.
What is the cheapest way to replace a missing tooth in Lucknow?
A removable acrylic partial denture, from around ₹3,000. A bridge costs ₹12,000 to ₹50,000, and an implant ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. Cheapest upfront and best value over fifteen years are not the same answer, particularly since a bridge requires cutting two healthy teeth.
Can I get an implant years after losing a tooth?
Usually yes, but the bone will have resorbed in the meantime and grafting is more likely to be needed. A CBCT scan measures what is left and settles it. Long-standing gaps in the upper back jaw often also need a sinus lift.
Do I need to replace a back molar nobody can see?
Often yes, for function rather than appearance. Molars do most of the chewing, and losing one shifts load onto the remaining teeth and onto the other side. The exception is a last molar with no opposing tooth, where leaving the gap can be a reasonable considered decision.
