Yellow Teeth: Why They Darken and What Actually Whitens Them

Short answer

There are two different problems here. Surface stain from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan sits on the enamel and comes off with a scaling at ₹800 to ₹2,500. Internal discolouration, from thinning enamel revealing the yellower dentine underneath, does not respond to cleaning and needs whitening at ₹8,000 to ₹20,000. Most people have some of both.

See someone urgently if

  • A single tooth that has darkened on its own, which usually means the nerve has died
  • Brown or white patches present since the teeth first came through, which may be fluorosis or enamel defects
  • Darkening alongside visible pitting or notching, suggesting erosion rather than staining
  • Rapid darkening over weeks rather than years

Otherwise, book in the normal way. Call +91 83036 12717.

What causes it

Surface stain

Tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco and paan deposit pigment onto the enamel and into the pellicle layer covering it. This is genuine staining that sits on top of the tooth, and it comes off mechanically. It is also the type that returns fastest.

Enamel thinning with age

The commonest cause of gradual yellowing and the one people least expect. Enamel is translucent and slightly blue-white; dentine underneath is yellow. As enamel thins through decades of wear and acid exposure, more dentine shows through. The tooth is not stained, it is simply revealing what was always underneath.

Acid erosion

Accelerates the same process. Frequent citrus, soft drinks, sports drinks or reflux dissolves enamel chemically and the teeth yellow noticeably faster.

Tetracycline and fluorosis

Tetracycline antibiotics taken while teeth were forming produce grey or banded discolouration that is built into the tooth and resists whitening. Excess fluoride during development causes fluorosis, seen as white flecks through to brown mottling. Both need masking rather than bleaching.

A single dark tooth

Different from generalised yellowing and worth flagging separately. One tooth darkening usually means the pulp has died, often years after a knock. It needs assessment, and it whitens by a different technique applied from inside the tooth after root canal treatment.

What helps before you are seen

Reduce the exposure, do not just brush harder

Drinking staining beverages with a meal rather than sipping through the day cuts the exposure time substantially. A straw helps for cold drinks. Rinsing with water afterwards helps more than most people expect.

Do not brush immediately after acid

Enamel is softened for roughly thirty minutes after acidic food or drink. Brushing then removes it, which makes teeth yellower over time rather than whiter. Wait, or rinse with water.

Be careful with whitening toothpaste

Most work by abrasion. They remove some surface stain and cannot change the underlying colour. Highly abrasive formulations used long term thin the enamel and end up making teeth look yellower.

Avoid charcoal and DIY remedies

Charcoal powders, baking soda scrubs and lemon juice all work by abrading or dissolving enamel. They produce a short-term brightening and permanent thinning, which is exactly the wrong trade.

How it is treated

Scaling and polishing first

This is the correct first step and it is sometimes the only one needed. Removing surface stain and calculus at ₹800 to ₹2,500 often makes a bigger difference than people expect, and it tells you what colour you are actually starting from.

In-chair whitening

A high-concentration peroxide gel applied under isolation, typically in a single appointment of sixty to ninety minutes, costing ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 in Lucknow. Works on the internal colour, not just the surface.

Take-home trays

Custom trays with a lower-concentration gel worn over one to two weeks. Slower, generally gentler on sensitivity, and produces a result that lasts comparably. Often used alongside in-chair treatment.

Internal bleaching for a single dead tooth

Whitening gel is sealed inside the tooth after root canal treatment and changed over a few visits. This is the correct approach for one dark tooth, and external whitening will not fix it.

Veneers where whitening cannot work

Tetracycline staining, severe fluorosis and enamel defects do not bleach out. Composite veneers at ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per tooth or porcelain at ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 mask them. This is a permanent decision and worth taking slowly.

Yellow teeth: common questions

Does teeth cleaning whiten teeth?

Partly, and not in the way people expect. Scaling removes surface stain from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth. That requires whitening, which is a separate treatment costing ₹8,000 to ₹20,000.

How much does teeth whitening cost in Lucknow?

In-chair whitening costs ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 in Lucknow in 2026. A scaling and polish at ₹800 to ₹2,500 should come first, because it removes surface stain and establishes the actual starting shade before anything is bleached.

Does teeth whitening damage enamel?

Professionally applied peroxide whitening does not remove or thin enamel. It causes temporary sensitivity in many people, which resolves within a few days. What does damage enamel is the DIY route: charcoal powders, baking soda scrubs and lemon juice all work by abrasion or acid.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Typically one to three years, depending heavily on tea, coffee, tobacco and paan consumption. Top-up trays at home extend it. It is a result that is maintained rather than one that is permanent.

Why is just one of my teeth darker than the others?

Usually because the nerve inside it has died, often years after a knock that seemed minor at the time. It needs assessment, because a dead pulp will eventually cause an abscess. External whitening will not correct it; internal bleaching after root canal treatment is the right approach.
