Veneers or Braces for Crooked Teeth?

Braces or aligners correct the position of the tooth. Nothing is removed and the result is a straight set of your own teeth requiring no ongoing restoration beyond a retainer.

Veneers leave the crooked tooth where it is and cover the front of it with a facing shaped to look straight. To make a facing sit flat on a tooth that is rotated or tilted, more enamel has to be removed than on a well-aligned tooth, sometimes considerably more.

So the choice is between eighteen months of visible treatment with nothing removed, and three weeks with a permanent commitment to restoring those teeth for the rest of your life.

Enamel does not regenerate. Once a tooth is prepared for a porcelain veneer, it will need a restoration on its front surface permanently. Veneers last ten to fifteen years, so a patient veneered at twenty-five should expect several replacement cycles across a lifetime, each of which removes a little more.

There is also a pulp risk. The more enamel removed, the closer the preparation comes to the nerve, and heavily prepared teeth have a higher rate of eventually needing root canal treatment. On a crooked tooth, the preparation is deeper on the side that protrudes.

None of this makes veneers wrong. It makes them a decision with a long tail, and one that a two-week timeline does not naturally encourage you to think through.

The teeth are already restored. If the front teeth carry large old fillings, are already crowned, or are structurally compromised, there is little healthy enamel left to protect and the argument against preparation largely disappears.

The problem is not really alignment. Discolouration that will not bleach, such as tetracycline staining or severe fluorosis, worn or chipped edges, teeth that are genuinely misshapen or too small, or gaps that orthodontics would close in a way you do not want.

Mild irregularity in an adult who does not want orthodontics and understands the trade. This is a legitimate informed choice, not a mistake, provided it is actually informed.

Straighten first with aligners or braces, then veneer or bond only what still needs it. Aligning the teeth first means far less enamel has to be removed, because the teeth are already where the veneers want them to be. Frequently the alignment alone resolves enough that only minor bonding is needed, at a fraction of the cost of a full veneer case.

It takes longer and it is the more conservative sequence. In Lucknow, aligners at ₹60,000 to ₹2,50,000 followed by selective composite bonding at ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per tooth often totals less than eight to ten porcelain veneers at ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 each, while removing almost no healthy tooth.
