What Is the Best Age for Braces?

Short answer

The usual window for full braces is 11 to 14, once most permanent teeth are through and jaw growth can still be guided. But the first orthodontic assessment should happen around age 7, because some problems, crossbites and severe crowding among them, are far easier to correct while the jaws are growing. Adults can be treated at any age with healthy gums.

Age 7: the assessment, not the treatment

Orthodontic bodies internationally recommend a first check at around seven. This is not a recommendation to start treatment. It is the age at which the first permanent molars and incisors are in place, which is enough for a specialist to see how the bite is developing and whether the jaws are growing in proportion.

Most children assessed at seven are simply reviewed periodically until the usual treatment age. A minority have something that is much easier to fix now than later.

Problems worth catching early

Crossbites, where upper teeth close inside the lower ones. Left alone, a child often shifts the jaw sideways to bite comfortably, and over years that can affect how the jaw itself grows.

Severe crowding, where widening the upper jaw with an expander while the mid-palatal suture is still open avoids extractions later. That window closes as the suture fuses in adolescence.

Thumb sucking or tongue thrust pushing the front teeth forward. Addressing the habit early prevents the skeletal effect.

Significant jaw size discrepancy, where growth can be guided while growth is still happening. After growth stops, the same correction may need surgery.

Why 11 to 14 is the usual window

By this age nearly all permanent teeth have erupted, so the full arrangement can be corrected in one course. Growth is still active, which helps with bite correction. Teeth also tend to move somewhat more readily than in adults.

There is a practical reason too: it precedes the years when appearance becomes most socially charged, and most of the child's peer group is in treatment at the same time.

Adults: no upper limit

Teeth move at any age. The biology of bone remodelling that lets braces work does not switch off. Adults in their forties, fifties and sixties are treated routinely.

Three differences apply. Treatment often runs slightly longer. Gum disease must be treated and stable first, because moving teeth in inflamed, bone-depleted tissue causes harm. And where the problem is skeletal rather than dental, braces alone may not resolve it in an adult, since there is no remaining growth to guide.

Adults also choose differently, which is why ceramic braces and clear aligners make up a much larger share of adult treatment.

Common questions

At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?

Around age 7. This is an assessment rather than the start of treatment. Most children are simply monitored afterwards, but it catches crossbites, severe crowding and jaw discrepancies at the stage where growth can still be used to help correct them.

Is 30 too old for braces?

No. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment as long as the gums and supporting bone are healthy. Adult cases may take slightly longer and require gum disease to be treated first, but the tooth movement itself works the same way.

Can braces be started before all baby teeth have fallen out?

Sometimes, as a first phase for a specific problem such as a crossbite or a narrow upper jaw, followed by a second phase once the permanent teeth are through. Most children do not need two phases, and a single course at 11 to 14 is the norm.

How much do children's braces cost in Lucknow?

The same as adult braces, ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 for metal braces on both arches in Lucknow in 2026. Early interceptive appliances such as expanders are separate and generally cost ₹10,000 to ₹25,000.
