Can Adults Get Braces?

Short answer

Yes. There is no upper age limit for braces as long as the gums and the bone supporting the teeth are healthy. Adults are checked for gum disease first, and treatment can take somewhat longer than in teenagers. Existing crowns, fillings and missing teeth shape the plan, discreet options are common, and retainers are needed for life to hold the result.

Teeth move at any age

Braces work because steady light force makes bone dissolve ahead of a tooth and rebuild behind it. That process does not stop at 18, 40 or 60, so adults in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond are treated routinely. What matters is the health of the gums and bone, not the date on the birth certificate.

The first check at about seven and the usual 11 to 14 window described in best age for braces apply to children, because growth can be used to help. Adults have no growth left to guide, which changes some plans but not whether treatment is possible. A teenager and an adult with the same crowding can often be treated with the same brackets, though the adult case may need more attention to gum health and to the bite.

The gum check comes first

Before any bracket goes on, the gums and bone should be examined, usually with X-rays. Moving teeth through bone that is already inflamed and thinned by untreated gum disease can make the loss worse. If there is gum disease, it is treated and brought under control first, and then monitored through the whole course of braces.

That is also the time for any decay to be treated. Cleaning is harder with braces, so the mouth should start in good shape. Regular hygiene visits during treatment matter more than they did before. See the gum treatment page if your gums bleed, and expect to learn a more careful cleaning routine with interdental brushes.

What is different about adult treatment

Fillings, crowns and bridges. Brackets bond more reliably to natural enamel than to some restorations, and removing a bracket from a porcelain crown can damage it. The orthodontist plans around them, and a crown that is old may be replaced after treatment.

Missing teeth. Gaps are common in adults, and teeth may have tilted into them. Braces can open or close the space, and which is right depends on whether a bridge or implant will fill it. An implant itself cannot be moved by braces.

Gum recession. Adults are more prone to receding gums, and straightening very crowded teeth can show small dark triangles between the teeth where gum does not fill the gap. A thin-gum case needs extra care, and your orthodontist should tell you beforehand if this is a risk in your mouth. Gentle brushing and early treatment of any recession help.

Duration and growth. Adult bone is denser, so treatment can run somewhat longer, and a jaw-size problem that growth could have helped may need a compromise or surgery. Your orthodontist should explain this from your records.

Grinding and jaw joints. Many adults clench or grind, or have a clicking jaw joint. Mention this before treatment, because tooth movement is planned around the bite and a brace does not cure grinding. A night guard is sometimes advised.

Time and commitment. Adults tend to be diligent patients, which helps, but work travel and missed visits stretch a case. Be realistic about a visit every four to six weeks, and about wearing elastics if they are prescribed.

Discreet options for adults

Many adults want treatment that is not obvious. Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and less noticeable than metal. Lingual braces hide the brackets behind the teeth (lingual braces), and clear aligners avoid brackets altogether but need 20 to 22 hours of wear a day (clear aligners vs braces).

Which one is possible depends on your bite and how far the teeth need to move. Be wary of a quick fix that straightens only the front teeth without addressing how the jaws meet, since the bite is what keeps the result stable. Aligners suit mild to moderate cases, and fixed braces cope with the more complex ones. Metal braces remain the least expensive, and many adults wear them without difficulty.

Retention is for life, and the cost

Adult teeth drift back after treatment as well, so a retainer is needed for as long as you want the teeth to stay straight. Types and care are covered in retainers after braces. Check that retainers are included in the quote.

In Lucknow in 2026, metal braces on both arches run ₹25,000 to ₹45,000, ceramic ₹40,000 to ₹70,000, and retainers ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. These are market ranges, not a quotation. The braces cost page has the details, and the braces and orthodontics page explains how treatment runs. Call the clinic to arrange an assessment, and bring any old dental X-rays and a list of the fillings, crowns or bridges you have had done.

Common questions

Am I too old for braces at 40 or 50?

No. Teeth move at any age if the gums and bone are healthy. Adults in their forties, fifties and sixties are treated routinely. A dental and gum examination with X-rays shows whether your mouth is ready.

Do braces take longer for adults?

Often somewhat, because adult bone is denser and growth cannot help. The length also depends on the case, extractions, and how closely you follow instructions. Your orthodontist can give an estimate after examining your records.

Can I have braces with crowns, fillings or missing teeth?

Usually yes. The plan works around them. Brackets can be bonded to crowns, but it can be harder and may damage the crown, and implants cannot be moved. Tell your orthodontist about all restorative work at the start.

Are there invisible braces for adults?

Nothing is fully invisible, but clear aligners and lingual braces are the least visible, and ceramic braces are discreet. Whether they suit you depends on how complex the movement is, so it needs an assessment.

Do adults need retainers for life?

Most orthodontists advise wearing retainers, usually at night, for as long as you want the teeth to stay straight. Teeth drift at any age, so retention does not have an end date. Agree the schedule with your orthodontist.
