How Long Do Braces Take?

Teeth move because sustained pressure causes bone to dissolve ahead of the tooth and rebuild behind it. That remodelling happens at roughly one millimetre a month and it is set by the biology, not by the appliance.

This is the fact that makes most speed claims checkable. No bracket system, wire alloy or aligner material moves teeth faster than bone can remodel. What better systems do is waste less time: fewer emergency visits, more efficient force delivery, fewer wasted appointments. That is worth something, and it is not the same as faster tooth movement.

How far the teeth need to travel. Obvious, and the biggest factor. Closing an extraction space of seven or eight millimetres takes most of a year on its own.

Whether extractions are needed. Severe crowding usually cannot be resolved by expansion alone, and closing the resulting spaces adds six to twelve months.

Bite correction versus alignment. Straightening the front teeth is quick. Correcting how the upper and lower jaws meet is the slow part, and it is also the part that determines whether the result is stable.

Adult versus adolescent. Adult treatment often runs somewhat longer, and skeletal problems that could be guided by growth in a child may need surgery in an adult.

Missed appointments and broken brackets. Each broken bracket costs you the movement that would have happened in that period. This is the most common avoidable cause of a case overrunning.

Attending every appointment on schedule. Unglamorous and the largest factor you personally control.

Not breaking brackets. Hard and sticky food is restricted for a reason, and each repair appointment is one where no progress is made.

Wearing elastics as instructed. Where the plan calls for them, elastics do the bite correction. Inconsistent wear is the commonest reason a case that was on track stops progressing.

Accepting a compromise where you have decided one is acceptable. Some cases can be finished earlier with a result that is good rather than ideal. That is a legitimate conversation to have openly at the start.

Short-term orthodontics exists and is not fraudulent. It aligns the visible front teeth and does not attempt to correct the bite.

For someone whose bite is already sound and whose complaint is mild front-tooth crowding, that is a reasonable and honest treatment. For someone with a bite problem, it treats the appearance and leaves the cause, and the relapse rate is higher because the underlying bite still pushes the teeth back.

The question to ask is direct: is this treating my bite or only the appearance of my front teeth? Both answers can be legitimate. Not being told which is not.

Teeth drift back towards their original position for life. Retention is not a six-month formality at the end of treatment; it is indefinite. Most orthodontists now advise night-time retainer wear for as long as you want the teeth to stay where they are.

Retainers cost ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. A course of treatment that ends without them will relapse, and re-treatment costs far more than the retainer would have.
