Overbite, overjet and what the bite is doing
An overbite is vertical: the upper front teeth cover too much of the lower ones. An overjet, which people often also call an overbite, is horizontal: the upper teeth stick out in front. Many patients have both together, and the plan depends on which one dominates.
The cause matters just as much. Some overbites come from the teeth alone, such as upper teeth tipped forward or lower teeth that have not erupted far enough. Others come from the jaws, where the lower jaw is smaller or set further back than the upper. A thumb-sucking habit in childhood can also contribute.
That is why a proper assessment with X-rays comes before any promise. Your orthodontist needs to know whether the problem is in the teeth or the jaws.
How braces correct it
Tooth-based overbites. The braces level the lower teeth, move the upper front teeth back, and bring the lower teeth into the right relationship. Rubber bands (elastics) stretched between upper and lower teeth pull the bite into position, and their wear is the most important thing you do yourself. The how long braces take guide explains why inconsistent elastic wear stalls a case.
Extractions. If crowding leaves no room to pull the upper front teeth back, orthodontists may take out premolars to create space. Extraction is not always needed, and it is a clinical judgement made on the X-rays, not a standard step. Extraction costs, where needed, are given on the braces cost page.
Some mild overbites can also be treated with aligners, with attachments and elastics where the plan calls for them. Larger bite corrections are generally more predictable with fixed braces, as the clear aligners vs braces guide explains.
Children, adults and jaw growth
In a child who is still growing, a functional appliance can encourage the lower jaw to grow forward relative to the upper, correcting a jaw-based overbite more easily. The window for this closes once growth slows down, which is one reason an assessment around age seven to eleven is worthwhile, as in the best age for braces.
An adult whose overbite comes from the jaws has no growth left to use. Braces can camouflage a moderate problem by moving the teeth to compensate, which gives a good bite and a good look in many people. A significant discrepancy may need orthognathic (jaw) surgery combined with braces. This is a larger decision and is explained fully at the consultation.
How long it takes and how stable the result is
Bite corrections run longer than simply straightening the front teeth. Most cases fall in the usual eighteen months to two and a half years, and a deep overbite or an extraction case can run toward the upper end.
Stability depends on the bite itself and on retainers. A deep overbite that is corrected can relapse if the teeth are not held, so wearing the retainer, as described in retainers after braces, is part of the treatment. For an assessment, see the orthodontist in Lucknow page.
Common questions
How long does it take braces to fix an overbite?
Usually eighteen months to two and a half years. Bite corrections take longer than straightening alone, and cases that need extractions or heavy elastic wear tend to be at the longer end. The estimate is given after X-rays and records.
Can clear aligners fix an overbite?
Mild to moderate overbites often can be, using attachments and elastics. Larger corrections are generally more predictable with fixed braces. Whether aligners suit your overbite depends on whether it is mostly in the teeth or the jaws.
Will I need teeth removed to fix my overbite?
Not always. Extractions are used when crowding leaves no room to move the upper teeth back. Many overbites are corrected without them. It is a clinical decision based on X-rays, and it is explained before treatment begins.
Can an adult fix an overbite with braces?
Often yes, if the problem is mainly in the teeth, or if the discrepancy is moderate and can be camouflaged by moving the teeth. A large jaw-based overbite in an adult may need jaw surgery, since there is no growth left to use.
Are elastics necessary for overbite correction?
Often. Rubber bands between the upper and lower teeth do much of the bite correction, and the result depends heavily on wearing them as instructed. Inconsistent wear is the commonest reason a case that was on track stops progressing.
