Choosing a dentist

Orthodontist Meaning: What an Orthodontist Does

Short answer

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a three-year MDS in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics. They straighten teeth and correct bite and jaw growth problems using braces, aligners and other appliances. General dentists can legally fit braces too; an orthodontist is the choice for complex bites, jaw discrepancies and children's growth guidance.

What an orthodontist is

Ortho means straight and odont means tooth. In India the specialty is Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, the second part referring to guiding jaw growth. The degree is an MDS taken after the BDS, and it sits among the branches in our guide to the types of dentists.

What an orthodontist treats

Orthodontists treat crowded, crooked or gapped teeth, and bite problems such as overbites, underbites and open bites, described in our guide to malocclusion. They use fixed braces, clear aligners, retainers and growth-guiding appliances in children.

Adults are treated too, not only children; the guide on braces for adults covers what changes. For an overview of treatment see braces and orthodontics, and for the local page, orthodontist in Lucknow.

Do you need an orthodontist for braces?

A registered general dentist can legally fit braces in India, and many do so for straightforward alignment. An orthodontist is worth seeking when the bite is complex, when the jaws are out of proportion, when teeth are impacted, when surgery may be needed, or when a child is still growing and the timing of treatment matters. The guide to the best age for braces explains the timing.

A general dentist who sees a case that needs more will usually say so and refer you.

How to check an orthodontist's qualification

Ask for the degree, an MDS in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, and the State Dental Council registration number. Registration is public record. Offering braces or aligners does not by itself make a dentist an orthodontist.

Common questions

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dentist with a further three-year MDS focused on teeth and jaw alignment. A general dentist handles routine care and may also fit braces in simple cases.

Can a normal dentist put on braces?

Yes. A registered dentist with a BDS can legally do orthodontic treatment in India. Complex cases are better handled by an orthodontist.

At what age should a child see an orthodontist?

Many children are first checked around the time the permanent teeth start to come through, though the right age depends on the child. A general or paediatric dentist can tell you whether a visit is worthwhile.

How do I check whether a dentist is an orthodontist?

Ask for the MDS in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics and the State Dental Council registration number. Registration is a matter of public record.
