How whitening works, and why it does not harm enamel
Whitening gels use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The peroxide diffuses through the enamel into the dentine and breaks down the large pigmented molecules that have accumulated there into smaller, colourless ones.
This is a chemical reaction with the stain molecules, not a removal of tooth structure. Nothing is scraped, dissolved or thinned. That is the fundamental difference between whitening and every abrasive method marketed as a natural alternative.
The sensitivity, which is real and temporary
A large proportion of people get some sensitivity during or just after whitening. Peroxide passes through the dentine tubules and irritates the pulp temporarily. It typically settles within a few days and does not cause lasting damage.
It is reduced by using a desensitising toothpaste for two weeks beforehand, by lower-concentration take-home gels over a longer period rather than a single high-concentration session, and by spacing sessions out. Tell the clinic if your teeth are already sensitive, because the protocol changes.
What is genuinely unsafe
Charcoal toothpaste and powders. These work by abrasion. They remove some surface stain and, with sustained use, thin the enamel. Since enamel is what makes teeth look white and dentine underneath is yellow, thinning it makes teeth yellower in the long run. The short-term brightening is real and the trade is bad.
Baking soda scrubs and lemon juice. The first abrades, the second dissolves enamel with acid. Both are commonly recommended online and both cause permanent damage.
Unsupervised high-concentration gels from unregulated sources. The risk is chemical burns to the gums and unpredictable concentrations. Professional whitening isolates the gums for exactly this reason.
Whitening over untreated decay or gum disease. Peroxide reaching an exposed pulp through a cavity causes severe pain. An examination first is not an upsell, it is the reason the treatment is comfortable.
What whitening cannot fix
Crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten. If you have restorations on your front teeth and whiten the natural teeth around them, they will no longer match, and correcting that means replacing them. This is the single most important thing to establish before starting.
Tetracycline staining and severe fluorosis are built into the tooth structure and respond poorly or not at all. Those need masking with veneers rather than bleaching.
A single dark tooth caused by a dead nerve needs internal bleaching after root canal treatment. External whitening will not touch it.
Surface stain from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan comes off with a scaling at ₹800 to ₹2,500, and that should always come first. It is sometimes the only thing needed, and it establishes your real starting shade.

Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
No. Professionally applied peroxide whitening works by breaking down pigment molecules chemically and does not remove or thin enamel. Temporary sensitivity is common and resolves in a few days. Abrasive methods such as charcoal powders and baking soda scrubs do thin enamel, permanently.
How much does teeth whitening cost in Lucknow?
In-chair whitening costs ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 in 2026. A scaling and polish at ₹800 to ₹2,500 should come first, since removing surface stain often produces a visible improvement on its own and establishes your actual starting shade.
How long does teeth whitening last?
One to three years typically, depending heavily on tea, coffee, tobacco and paan consumption. Take-home top-up trays extend it. It is a result that is maintained rather than one that is permanent.
Is charcoal toothpaste good for whitening?
No. It works by abrasion, removing some surface stain while thinning enamel over time. Because enamel is the white layer and the dentine underneath is yellow, sustained use makes teeth look yellower in the long run. It is one of the clearest cases where a popular remedy does the opposite of what is claimed.
Will whitening work on my crowns and fillings?
No. Restorative materials do not respond to peroxide. If you whiten the natural teeth around existing front-tooth crowns, veneers or fillings, they will no longer match, and the only fix is to replace them. Establish this before you start, not afterwards.
