Veneers meaning
In everyday English a veneer is a thin layer of fine material over something cheaper, as with wood. A dental veneer works the same way: a slim shell over the visible face of a natural tooth. It does not replace the tooth, it covers it.
Veneers are used on front teeth to improve appearance. They are part of cosmetic work often called smile design; our page on smile design shows how treatments fit together.
Types of veneers
Porcelain (ceramic) veneers are made in a laboratory from an impression or scan of the teeth, then bonded on at a later visit. Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth from tooth-coloured resin, usually in a single visit. Composite is more easily repaired, while porcelain resists staining and chipping better.
A dentist may suggest veneers for stained teeth that do not respond to whitening, small chips, gaps, or teeth that are slightly short or misshapen. Whitening is a different option, and our guide on teeth whitening at home explains how it works.
| Porcelain veneer | Composite veneer | |
|---|---|---|
| Made | In a laboratory, then bonded | Built directly on the tooth |
| Visits | Usually two or more | Often one |
| Stain resistance | High | Lower, can stain over time |
| Repair | Often replaced if damaged | Easier to repair |

Things to know before choosing veneers
Most veneers need a thin layer of enamel taken off the tooth so the shell sits flush. That is permanent, so veneers are a long-term decision. They are not suited to everyone, for example people with active gum disease, untreated decay or heavy grinding, who may need other care first.
Possible downsides are sensitivity, chipping and the need for replacement over the years. Our guide on veneers side effects goes through them, and veneers vs braces helps with choosing between the two.
Caring for veneers
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth daily and keep up regular check-ups. Avoid biting very hard objects such as pen caps or ice. A night guard may be advised if you grind your teeth.

Common questions
Are veneers the same as crowns?
No. A veneer covers only the front of a tooth, while a crown covers the whole tooth. Crowns are used when a tooth is weak or damaged.
Are veneers permanent?
They are long-lasting but not forever. The tooth preparation is permanent, and the veneer may need replacing after some years.
Do veneers damage teeth?
Placing them removes a little enamel, which cannot grow back. Done carefully, teeth underneath stay healthy. A dentist can explain what removal your teeth would need.
