Find out why the gap is there before choosing a fix
A gap between the front teeth (a diastema) is often just the way your teeth and jaw happened to grow. That kind is harmless and closing it is a cosmetic choice. But some gaps have a cause that needs treating, and closing the space over the top of it only hides the problem.
Gum disease is the one to rule out, especially if the gap is new or widening. When bone supporting the teeth is lost, front teeth drift and fan outward. Bleeding gums, bad breath or a tooth that feels loose alongside a new gap point this way, and the gums come first. See the page on bleeding gums.
A thick frenum, the band of tissue between the upper lip and the gum, can hold the two front teeth apart. A small procedure can release it, but timing matters: it is usually done alongside or after orthodontic closure, because the gap can reopen if it is released first. Habits such as tongue thrusting or a missing or undersized side tooth can also leave a space.
Composite bonding, the usual way of filling a small gap
Dental gap filling with composite means adding tooth-coloured resin to the sides of the front teeth so they widen to meet each other. It is built directly on the tooth in one visit, often with little or no drilling, and it is reversible or repairable.
It suits small to moderate gaps in teeth that are otherwise well aligned. Very wide gaps can be closed this way, but the teeth then end up too wide and look square or bulky, which is a shape problem no amount of polishing fixes.
Composite stains and chips more than porcelain and will need polishing and repair over the years. In Lucknow in 2026, composite work is priced at roughly ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per tooth, and the full range is on the veneers cost page.
Veneers: more permanent, less reversible
Porcelain veneers can close a gap and change the shape and shade of the teeth at the same time. They are tougher and stain far less than composite. The price is that enamel must be removed to place them, and that is permanent. Read veneers vs braces before deciding, and veneers side effects for what that commitment looks like in practice.
For a gap alone, in teeth that are otherwise healthy, cutting good enamel to close a space is often more than the problem needs. Veneers make more sense when the teeth also need reshaping, or are discoloured, worn or already restored.
Braces and aligners: slower, but the only option that moves the teeth
Orthodontics closes the gap by actually moving the teeth together, with nothing removed or added. It is the conservative choice, and the right one when the gap is wide, when several teeth are spaced, or when the bite is also off.
It takes months rather than one visit, and a retainer afterwards is essential, because a gap is one of the most relapse-prone problems in orthodontics. Without a retainer, the teeth tend to drift back.
Orthodontic closure and bonding also combine well: close most of the space, then use a small amount of bonding to finish the proportions. That is often the most conservative route to a good result. The details are on the smile design page.
How to choose
If the gap is narrow and the teeth are otherwise fine, bonding is usually the first thing to discuss: it is quick, it costs the least, and it commits you to nothing. If the gap is wide, or you want your own teeth moved, braces or aligners. If the teeth need more than the gap fixed, veneers.
In every case, a check of the gums and the frenum comes first. Call the clinic to talk through which of these fits your gap.
Common questions
Can a gap between front teeth close on its own?
In children, a gap between the upper front teeth is common and often narrows when the canines come through. In adults a gap rarely closes by itself. A new or widening gap in an adult should be checked for gum disease.
Is dental gap filling permanent?
Composite bonding is long lasting but not permanent. It can stain or chip and may need polishing or repair, and it typically needs replacing after some years. Its advantage is that it can be undone or redone, which porcelain veneers cannot.
Does closing a gap with bonding damage the teeth?
Usually little or no enamel needs to be removed, so it is among the most conservative cosmetic options. The teeth underneath stay healthy as long as the bonded edges are kept clean and any chips are repaired.
Will the gap come back after braces?
It can. Gaps between the front teeth are prone to reopening, which is why a retainer is needed afterwards, sometimes a fixed wire bonded behind the teeth. A tight frenum can also pull the teeth apart again if it was never addressed.
Is a gap between the front teeth a sign of gum disease?
Sometimes. A gap that appears or widens in adulthood, with bleeding gums, bad breath or loose-feeling teeth, can mean bone loss from gum disease. A gap you have always had is usually just spacing. A dentist can tell the difference with an examination and X-ray.
