How Does Chipped Tooth Repair Work?

Short answer

A chipped tooth is fixed according to how much is missing. A tiny chip can be smoothed and polished, a small to medium chip is rebuilt with tooth-coloured composite bonding, and a larger break may need a veneer or crown. If the chip has exposed the nerve, a root canal comes first. The tooth, its position and your bite decide the choice.

The fix depends on size, position and the nerve

Three questions decide the repair. How much tooth is missing, which tooth it is, and has the chip reached the nerve. A chip that is only enamel is a cosmetic or comfort problem. One that reaches the dentine causes sensitivity. One that reaches the pulp, seen as a pink or red spot, is a dental emergency in the making.

Front teeth are judged mainly on appearance, back teeth on strength, because chewing forces are far greater at the back. A dentist will check the bite, test the tooth and often take an X-ray to look for a crack running deeper than the chip.

Small chips: smoothing and composite bonding

A very small chip of enamel can be smoothed and polished, with nothing added. If the shape is noticeably changed, composite bonding rebuilds it. The dentist roughens the surface slightly, applies tooth-coloured resin in layers, shapes it, hardens it with a light and polishes it. It is usually done in one visit, often with little or no anaesthetic and little or no drilling.

In Lucknow in 2026, composite bonding for a chip is ₹500 to ₹3,000 per tooth. Composite is fairly durable but can stain, chip or wear, and commonly lasts several years before it needs polishing, repair or replacement. If you still have the broken piece and it is clean, ask whether it can be bonded back on.

Larger chips: veneers and crowns

A porcelain veneer covers the front of a tooth and suits a front tooth with a larger chip, or one that is also discoloured or misshapen. It is tougher and stains less than composite, but enamel is removed to place it, which is permanent. Read the veneers side effects page before choosing, and the smile design service describes how the options are weighed.

A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when a large part is lost, especially on a back tooth. Where a lot of the tooth is missing a filling would leave thin walls that break again. In Lucknow in 2026, crowns cost ₹3,000 to ₹25,000 depending on material. Both veneers and crowns commonly last ten years or more with good care, though that is a range and not a promise.

Front teeth and back teeth are fixed differently

On a front tooth the aim is shape, colour and a smooth edge, so bonding or a veneer is common. A chipped front tooth sometimes sits beside a gap or a crooked neighbour, and the repair can be combined with closing that space, as described on the page about a gap between front teeth. If braces are an option, veneers vs braces weighs the two.

On a back tooth the aim is strength. A chipped cusp on a tooth that already has a large filling is often better covered by a crown than patched, because the walls that remain are thin. Back teeth take the heaviest bite, so a repair that would be fine at the front can fail there.

When the nerve is exposed

If the chip has opened into the pulp, the nerve will usually become infected without treatment. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp and seals the tooth, and it costs ₹3,000 to ₹9,000 in Lucknow in 2026, plus the crown afterwards. A root-treated back tooth is brittle and almost always needs a crown to survive.

In a young tooth that is still developing, the dentist may try to keep the nerve alive. Treatment depends on the age of the tooth and how recently it broke, and it is a reason not to wait. A tooth cracked below the gum, or split vertically, may not be repairable and may need removal.

Before your visit, and how to protect the repair

Avoid chewing on the chipped tooth, keep the area clean, and cover a sharp edge so it does not cut your tongue. Keep any broken piece. The first-hour steps are covered on the page about a broken or chipped tooth, so they are not repeated here.

Do not wait if there is pain, a loose tooth, bleeding or swelling, and note any sensitivity to cold, sweet or biting pressure so you can describe it. Once repaired, avoid biting nails, ice, pens and hard packaging, and ask about a night guard if you grind your teeth, since grinding is a common reason a repair fails. Call the clinic to ask about an appointment.

Common questions

Can a chipped tooth be left alone?

A tiny chip with no pain and no sharp edge can be monitored, but it is worth a check. Chips can hide cracks, and a rough edge can cut the tongue or collect plaque. If you feel pain, sensitivity or see pink tissue, do not wait.

How long does composite bonding last on a chipped tooth?

Commonly several years, though it depends on your bite, habits and the size of the repair. It can stain, wear or chip, and it can usually be polished, repaired or redone without removing more tooth. Hard foods and grinding shorten its life.

Does fixing a chipped tooth hurt?

Bonding is often done with little or no anaesthetic, since little drilling is needed. If the chip is deep or the tooth is sensitive, the dentist can numb it. Root canal treatment and crowns are done under local anaesthetic.

Can a broken piece of tooth be stuck back on?

Sometimes, if the fragment is clean and intact and the dentist can bond it accurately. It often gives a good colour and shape match. Keep it moist, ideally in milk, and bring it to the appointment.

Will a chipped tooth need a root canal?

Only if the chip reaches the nerve or the tooth has been damaged enough that the nerve is dying. Most small chips do not need one. Pink or red tissue, lasting pain or darkening of the tooth are signs to be checked promptly.
