See someone urgently if
- Gums receding, or teeth that feel loose or have started to drift apart
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste alongside the bleeding
- Bleeding that continues past two weeks of genuinely good cleaning
- Spontaneous bleeding with no brushing at all, or bruising elsewhere on the body
- Painful swollen gums with fever and ulceration, which needs prompt attention
Otherwise, book in the normal way. Call +91 83036 12717.
What causes it
Plaque at the gum line
The near-universal cause. Bacterial plaque left along the gum margin provokes an inflammatory response, and inflamed tissue bleeds when disturbed. Healthy gums do not bleed when brushed, so bleeding is a finding, not a normal variation.
Hardened calculus
Plaque left in place mineralises within days into calculus, which cannot be brushed off. It holds fresh plaque permanently against the gum, which is why the inflammation does not resolve with better brushing alone once calculus has formed.
Brushing too little, not too hard
The widespread belief that bleeding means over-brushing has it backwards in most cases. Brushing hard does cause harm, through recession and enamel wear, but it is not what makes gums bleed. Avoiding the bleeding area lets more plaque accumulate there and deepens the inflammation.
Pregnancy and hormonal change
Hormonal shifts exaggerate the gum response to the same amount of plaque. Pregnancy gingivitis is common and still needs cleaning rather than tolerating.
Diabetes
Poorly controlled blood glucose worsens gum disease, and gum disease in turn worsens glycaemic control. The relationship runs in both directions, which is why periodontal treatment is part of diabetic care.
Smoking, which hides it
Nicotine constricts the blood vessels in the gums, so smokers often bleed less despite having more disease and more bone loss. Absence of bleeding in a smoker is not reassurance.
Medications and blood disorders
Blood thinners increase bleeding without causing the underlying inflammation. Rarely, gum bleeding with no obvious dental explanation is a first sign of a blood disorder, which is a reason not to ignore it indefinitely.
What helps before you are seen
Keep brushing the bleeding area
Twice daily, soft brush, angled into the gum line. Expect bleeding to increase slightly for a few days and then reduce as the inflammation settles. This is the single most important thing on this page.
Clean between the teeth daily
Floss or interdental brushes. A toothbrush does not reach the surfaces between teeth, and those are exactly where gum disease usually starts.
Warm salt water rinses
Helpful for symptomatic relief while the inflammation settles. It does not remove plaque, so it supplements cleaning rather than replacing it.
Chlorhexidine, short term only
Useful for a week or two during an acute flare. It stains teeth with prolonged use and is not a long-term substitute for mechanical cleaning.
How it is treated
Scaling
Removing calculus is what breaks the cycle, because it cannot be brushed away and it holds plaque against the gum permanently. Scaling and polishing costs ₹800 to ₹2,500 in Lucknow and is the highest-return appointment in dentistry.
Root planing where pockets have formed
Once deposits have tracked below the gum line, cleaning the root surface under local anaesthetic is needed. This is charged per quadrant at ₹1,500 to ₹4,000, or ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 for the full mouth.
Assessment with X-rays
Establishing whether bone has already been lost is what separates reversible gingivitis from periodontitis, and it determines whether this is a two-week fix or a lifelong management problem.
Flap surgery for advanced disease
Where pockets are too deep to clean from above, surgical access is needed, at ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 per quadrant.
Maintenance afterwards
Periodontal disease is controlled, not cured. Recall cleanings every three to four months rather than six are what protect the result.
Bleeding gums: common questions
Should I stop brushing where my gums bleed?
No. This is the most common and most damaging mistake. The bleeding is caused by plaque at that spot, so cleaning less leaves more plaque and worsens the inflammation. Brush the area gently but thoroughly with a soft brush; bleeding typically reduces within one to two weeks.
Do bleeding gums go away on their own?
Gingivitis often improves with better cleaning alone, but where hardened calculus has formed it cannot be brushed away and will keep the inflammation going. That requires a professional scaling. Bleeding persisting past two weeks of good cleaning needs examination.
Can bleeding gums cause tooth loss?
Untreated, yes. Gingivitis that progresses to periodontitis destroys the bone supporting the teeth, and that loss is permanent. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and its earliest visible sign is bleeding when brushing.
How much does gum treatment cost in Lucknow?
Routine scaling and polishing costs ₹800 to ₹2,500. Deep cleaning below the gum line is charged per quadrant at ₹1,500 to ₹4,000, or ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 for the full mouth. Flap surgery for advanced disease costs ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 per quadrant.
Why do my gums bleed only in one spot?
Localised bleeding usually means a localised cause: a food trap between two teeth, an overhanging filling edge, a poorly fitting crown margin, or a deeper pocket at that one site. It is worth pointing out specifically, because the fix is often a single small correction.
