RPD full form and meaning
A removable partial denture is exactly what the name says: partial, because some natural teeth remain, and removable, because you can lift it out. The artificial teeth sit on a pink gum-coloured base, or on a thin metal framework, with small clasps that hold it against nearby teeth.
It is different from a complete denture, which replaces every tooth in a jaw. See dentures meaning for the basics of both, and the term edentulous for when no teeth remain.
Types of RPD
Acrylic RPDs have a plastic base and are lighter and often less costly, but bulkier. Cast metal framework RPDs are thinner, stronger and fit more precisely. Flexible RPDs use a soft resin that bends slightly and can feel more comfortable for some people.
A prosthodontist is the specialist who plans complex dentures; see prosthodontist meaning.
| Type | Base material | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | Hard plastic | Bulkier, simple |
| Cast metal framework | Metal with acrylic teeth | Thin, precise fit |
| Flexible | Soft nylon-type resin | Light, bends slightly |

RPD vs fixed bridge vs implant
An RPD can replace several teeth in different places at once and needs little or no cutting of natural teeth. A fixed bridge is cemented and more stable; see FPD full form. An implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, as compared in dental implant vs bridge.
Clean the denture daily with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner, remove it at night unless advised otherwise, and keep it in water. Ask about dental implants if you want a fixed option, and see dentures cost for the price guide.
Common questions
Is an RPD the same as a denture?
It is a type of denture: a partial one that can be removed. A complete denture replaces all teeth in a jaw.
Can I sleep with a removable partial denture?
Most dentists advise taking it out at night to rest the gums and reduce the risk of decay and infection, and storing it in clean water. Follow your own dentist's advice.
Will an RPD feel strange at first?
Yes. Speaking and eating take a few weeks to get used to, and small sore spots may need adjustment by the dentist.
