Milk Teeth Schedule: When Each Baby Tooth Comes In, with Age Chart

Short answer

Milk teeth usually come through from about six months, starting with the lower front teeth, and the full set of 20 is typically in by around two and a half to three years. The chart below gives the usual age range for each tooth. Normal variation is wide, so a child a few months early or late is rarely a concern.

Milk teeth eruption chart

The ages below are the widely published ranges for when each milk tooth comes through the gum. They are ranges, not deadlines, and each child follows their own timetable. Teeth generally come in pairs, left and right together, and the lower tooth often comes slightly before its upper partner.

Our guide on primary teeth explains what the milk set is and what it does.

Order in which milk teeth come in

The usual order is the lower front teeth first, then the upper front teeth, then the lateral incisors either side. Next come the first molars, then the canines, and last the second molars at the back. Note that the first molars come before the canines.

Teething can bring drooling, chewing on everything, irritability and sore gums, but not high fever or serious illness. Our guide on teething symptoms covers what is normal and when to see a doctor.

Late teeth: when to get a check

Late teething is common and often runs in families. Premature babies may be a little later by their corrected age. If a child has no teeth at all by around 18 months, or the pattern is very uneven, it is worth a dental check, mostly to rule out a rare cause. Teeth that come in crooked, or a baby tooth still in place when the adult tooth appears behind it, should also be looked at.

Milk teeth fall out in much the same order, from around six years, shown in our guide on the milk teeth falling age. For care from the first tooth, see the kids dentistry page.

Common questions

At what age do babies get their first tooth?

Usually around six months, but anywhere from about four months to a year or a little later can be normal. Some babies are even born with a tooth or have one within weeks, which is uncommon and worth mentioning to a doctor or dentist.

When should all 20 milk teeth be in?

By about two and a half to three years in most children. Some are earlier and some a little later without any problem.

Does early or late teething mean anything about health?

Usually not. It mostly reflects family pattern. A child who is very late along with other developmental concerns should be checked by a paediatrician.

When should I start brushing my baby's teeth?

As soon as the first tooth appears, gently, twice a day. Our guide on brushing children's teeth gives the technique, and a dentist can advise about the first visit.
