Mouth ulcers

What to Eat in Mouth Ulcer: Foods to Choose and Foods to Avoid

Short answer

With a mouth ulcer, choose soft, cool or lukewarm, mild foods such as khichdi, curd, well-cooked dal, banana, porridge and smoothies. Avoid spicy, sour, salty, crunchy and very hot food, which sting and scrape the ulcer. Drink plenty of water. If the ulcer is still there after three weeks, have it examined.

The idea: soft, mild and not too hot

Food cannot heal an ulcer, but the right choices stop it from being irritated while it heals by itself. An ulcer hurts when food is spicy, acidic or salty, when it has sharp edges that scrape, or when it is too hot. So the goal is food that is soft, mild and lukewarm or cool.

Eat small portions more often if big meals are uncomfortable. Chew on the side away from the ulcer and sip water between mouthfuls to rinse. A straw can help with cold drinks, aimed past the ulcer.

Mouth ulcer food: what to choose and what to avoid

Familiar home food often suits well. Plain khichdi, curd rice, well-mashed dal, idli, soft chapati soaked in dal, upma and daliya are gentle. Ripe banana, papaya, boiled or mashed potato, eggs and soft paneer are easy to eat. Cold milk, lassi without salt and buttermilk can be soothing.

Helping with the rest of the routine

Rinse with warm salt water after meals and brush gently with a soft brush. Our guide on mouth ulcer home remedies covers rinses, gels and what to avoid putting on the ulcer.

If ulcers keep returning, food can play a part in two ways: a trigger food that sets them off in you, or a poor diet low in iron, B12 or folate. Noting what you ate before each ulcer is a useful clue, and a doctor can check for deficiency.

When eating is the problem

See a dentist or doctor if the ulcer is too painful to eat or drink, if you are losing weight, or if an ulcer has not healed in three weeks. Our guide on aphthous mouth ulcers explains the usual healing time, and the mouth ulcers page lists the warning signs.

A child or baby who refuses to drink needs to be seen the same day, as dehydration develops quickly. Go to a hospital emergency department if swallowing or breathing is difficult.

Common questions

Is curd good for a mouth ulcer?

Plain, cool curd is soft, mild and easy to eat, so it is a good choice while an ulcer heals. Avoid sour or salted curd, and anything with chilli or pickle.

Which fruits are safe with a mouth ulcer?

Soft, low-acid fruits such as ripe banana and papaya are usually comfortable. Citrus fruits, pineapple and tomato tend to sting, so leave them until the ulcer settles.

Should I avoid tea and coffee with a mouth ulcer?

Let hot drinks cool to lukewarm, because heat irritates the ulcer. Many people find cold or lukewarm drinks more comfortable. Skip the spoonful of salt or spice in anything.

Does what I eat cause mouth ulcers?

Some foods trigger ulcers in some people, and a diet low in iron, B12 or folate can contribute. For most people, though, the cause is not food. If ulcers keep returning, ask a doctor about tests.
