Mouth ulcers

Mouth Ulcer Home Remedies: What Helps, What Stings and What to Skip

Short answer

Warm salt water rinses, soft and cool food, avoiding spicy or sour triggers and a protective or numbing gel used as directed on the label can ease a mouth ulcer while it heals by itself in 7 to 14 days. None of them is a cure. An ulcer that is still there after three weeks needs examining.

How to heal an ulcer in the mouth: what actually helps

Most mouth ulcers are the ordinary aphthous kind and heal on their own. Home care cannot speed that up much, but it can keep the ulcer clean, protect it from irritation and make eating bearable. The goal is comfort, not a cure.

Warm salt water is the simplest. Stir a pinch of salt into a glass of warm water, swish gently and spit out. A few times a day after meals is enough. It is soothing and keeps food debris away, but it will sting briefly on a raw ulcer, and stronger is not better.

Keep brushing, gently, with a soft brush and avoid dragging the bristles across the sore. Brushing with a toothpaste free of sodium lauryl sulphate helps some people who get frequent ulcers.

Not everything from the kitchen shelf is safe or sensible on an open sore. The table covers the usual ones. Our guide on what to eat with a mouth ulcer covers the food side in more detail.

What to avoid putting on an ulcer

Do not apply undiluted spices, lemon, toothpaste, alcohol-based products, or crushed tablets directly on an ulcer. They burn healthy tissue and often make the ulcer larger and slower to heal. Aspirin held against the sore does the same.

Do not take antibiotics for an ordinary ulcer. They do nothing for aphthous ulcers. A doctor prescribes them only when there is a proven bacterial infection.

If you have a recurring pattern, treat the trigger rather than each ulcer: a sharp tooth edge, a poorly fitting denture, or a low iron, B12 or folate level. Our guide on aphthous mouth ulcers explains the usual triggers.

When home remedies are the wrong answer

Home care is for ulcers that are getting better. An ulcer that has not healed within three weeks needs examining, no matter how little it hurts, and no rinse or gel changes that rule. The mouth ulcers page lists the other warning signs.

See a dentist or doctor sooner if ulcers are large, come back often, stop you eating or drinking, or come with fever. Our guide on which doctor to see for a mouth ulcer helps you choose.

Common questions

Does salt water heal a mouth ulcer?

It does not heal it faster, but it keeps the area clean and is soothing. Use warm water with a small pinch of salt and spit it out. A mouth ulcer still takes its usual 7 to 14 days.

Is honey good for a mouth ulcer?

A thin smear of honey is soothing for some adults, and it is a common household measure. It is not a proven treatment. Never give honey to a baby under one year.

Can I use a numbing gel on a mouth ulcer?

Over-the-counter protective or numbing gels can ease pain enough to eat. Use them as directed on the label, and ask a pharmacist first for children or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How fast can I get rid of a mouth ulcer?

There is no safe way to make an ordinary ulcer vanish overnight. Removing the trigger and keeping it clean lets it heal in its usual 7 to 14 days. If it lasts three weeks, get it examined.
