What clove oil really does
Clove oil gets its numbing effect from eugenol, which has a mild local anaesthetic and antiseptic action. Dentists have long used eugenol-based materials in small, controlled amounts for exactly that reason. That is why the home remedy has a real basis rather than being only folklore.
The effect is short. It dulls the surface it touches for a while and then wears off. Evidence that it works well, or better than a standard painkiller, is limited, so treat it as a modest stop-gap.
What it cannot do is reach the cause. If the pain comes from decay that has reached the nerve, a crack or an abscess, the problem is still there when the numbness fades. The causes and the treatment that actually settles them are on the toothache page.
The risks of putting it on neat
Pure clove oil is strong. Dabbed neat on the gum or cheek, it can burn and blister the soft tissue, and the sore patch it leaves can hurt as much as the tooth. People who use it repeatedly are more likely to irritate the gum.
Some people are allergic to it. Stop at once if the mouth burns, swells or becomes itchy. It should not be swallowed in quantity, and it is not suitable for young children, who can be harmed by a small amount.
If you are pregnant, on a blood thinner or have a bleeding condition, ask a doctor or pharmacist before using it. If you decide to try it, a common safer approach is to dilute a drop in a plain carrier oil and touch it to a piece of cotton, held against the tooth rather than rubbed into the gum. Do not repeat it through the day.
Other remedies people try, and how they hold up
Warm salt water rinses are safe and cheap. They help most where the trouble is food caught between teeth or an inflamed gum, and much less for pain from inside the tooth.
A cold pack on the outside of the cheek can ease some throbbing pain. Avoid heat on a swollen face, which can help infection spread. Sitting with your head raised helps at night.
Garlic paste, turmeric paste, asafoetida (hing) and herbal tooth powders are widely used. Garlic can burn the gum, and none of these treat the cause. Alcohol held on the tooth does not help and irritates the mouth. Hydrogen peroxide is not a routine toothache remedy and should only be used as a dentist advises.
Ayurvedic and herbal pastes often contain clove or similar oils, so the same limits apply to them. They may soothe for a while, but none removes decay or drains an abscess.
When home remedies are the wrong choice
If there is swelling of the face, fever, a bad taste or a discharge from the gum, do not spend the day on remedies. That is spreading infection and needs care the same day. Our page on face swelling due to tooth infection explains the signs, and a hospital emergency department is the place if breathing or swallowing is affected.
For ordinary toothache, a standard painkiller taken as directed on the label usually does more than clove oil. The painkiller guide covers the options and who should avoid them, and the dental emergency guide covers what can wait until morning.
The aim of any remedy is to get you comfortably to an appointment. Pain that keeps coming back, or that wakes you at night, means the tooth needs treatment, whether that is a filling or a root canal.
Common questions
Does clove oil really numb a toothache?
Yes, briefly. Eugenol in clove oil is a mild local anaesthetic, so it can dull a sore tooth or gum for a short time. It does not treat the cause, the effect wears off, and evidence that it outperforms an ordinary painkiller is limited. Treat it as a stop-gap for a few hours.
Is it safe to put clove oil directly on the gum?
Not neat. Pure clove oil can burn and blister the gum and cheek, and some people are allergic to it. If you use it, dilute a drop in a plain carrier oil and touch it to cotton held against the tooth. Keep it away from young children and ask a doctor first if pregnant.
Can clove oil cure a tooth infection?
No. It may numb the surface, but it cannot remove decay or drain an abscess. A tooth infection needs treatment by a dentist, and swelling of the face, fever or trouble swallowing needs care the same day. Hide the pain with clove oil and the infection can keep spreading.
Are ayurvedic remedies for toothache effective?
Some herbal pastes and oils contain clove and may soothe briefly, but none treats the underlying decay, crack or infection. At most they are a short stop-gap before a dental visit. Avoid applying strong preparations repeatedly to the gum, which can irritate or burn it.
What should I use instead of clove oil?
A standard over-the-counter painkiller you tolerate, taken as directed on the label, warm salt water rinses, a cold pack on the cheek and an elevated head at night. Ask a pharmacist or doctor if unsure which painkiller suits you, then book an appointment so the cause is treated.
