Do I Need a Mouth Guard for Teeth Grinding?

Short answer

You need a night guard if grinding is wearing, chipping or cracking your teeth, or if you wake with a sore jaw. It protects the teeth from wear but does not stop the grinding itself. Not everyone who grinds needs one: mild, painless grinding with no visible wear can often just be watched. A dentist can tell which applies to you.

How to tell grinding is a problem rather than a habit

Many people clench or grind at night, and plenty of them never need treatment. It becomes a dental problem when the teeth show the effects. Look for flattened biting edges, small chips, teeth that have become short or sensitive, and notches near the gum line.

Other clues are a sore or tired jaw on waking, headaches at the temples, a partner who hears grinding, and a ridge along the inside of the cheek or sides of the tongue.

You often cannot feel it happening, so a dentist's examination is the reliable way to tell old wear from active wear. If sensitivity is your main complaint, our page on sensitive teeth covers the other causes to rule out.

What a night guard does, and what it does not

A night guard is a thin hard plastic cover that fits over the upper or lower teeth. It gives the teeth a smooth surface to grind against, so the guard wears instead of the enamel. For a person who is losing tooth structure, that protection is the main point.

It does not stop the grinding. Clenching is largely driven by stress, sleep and habit, and the guard simply takes the damage. Some people grind less once they wear one and some do not notice a difference.

For jaw muscle pain it often helps, but it manages the problem rather than curing it. The jaw-pain side, including clicking and locking, is covered on our jaw pain page, which also explains why irreversible dental work should not be the first answer to jaw pain. For the soreness itself, the painkiller guide covers what is sensible to take and who should avoid it.

Custom guard or shop-bought: the honest trade-off

A custom guard is made from an impression or scan of your teeth, so it fits closely and can be adjusted to your bite. It lasts longer and is more comfortable to wear every night. In Lucknow in 2026, custom guards cost roughly ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 depending on the material and design.

Shop-bought boil-and-bite guards cost less and can be a stop-gap. They are bulkier, fit less precisely and tend to wear out sooner. A badly fitting guard that you cannot tolerate protects nothing, and one that shifts your bite can cause its own trouble.

Call the clinic if a guard is what you need.

When a guard is only part of the answer

If grinding has already cracked a tooth, a guard will not repair it. A tooth that hurts when you bite and release needs to be seen, and a split tooth can be lost if it is left. The dental emergency guide lists the broken-tooth signs that cannot wait, and the toothache page covers the pain that follows.

A guard is also advised after dental work that grinding could damage, such as veneers, crowns and implants, because heavy biting force shortens the life of that work.

Loud snoring, gasping at night or heavy daytime tiredness alongside grinding can point to a sleep disorder, which is a matter for your doctor rather than the dentist alone.

Looking after a night guard

Brush it with a soft brush and cool water after each use and let it dry. Hot water can warp it, and so can leaving it in a hot car. Store it in the case that came with it, away from pets.

Bring it to check-ups. A guard that has worn through, cracked or stopped fitting should be replaced, and a thin guard can hide how much grinding you are doing.

Children who grind baby teeth are usually left alone, since it commonly settles as the teeth change. Ask a dentist before any guard is made for a child.

Common questions

Does a night guard stop teeth grinding?

No. It protects the teeth by taking the wear instead of the enamel, but the clenching behaviour usually continues. Some people grind less with one, others do not notice a change. Stress, sleep and habit drive the grinding, so a guard manages the damage rather than curing the cause.

Can I use a shop-bought night guard?

Yes, as a stop-gap. Boil-and-bite guards cost less but fit less precisely, feel bulkier and wear out sooner. A custom guard is more comfortable and lasts longer. If a guard feels uncomfortable or changes how your teeth meet in the morning, stop wearing it and ask a dentist.

How long does a night guard last?

It depends on the material and how hard you grind. A custom guard can last for years, but a heavy grinder can wear through one sooner. Bring it to each check-up, because a guard that is worn thin, cracked or no longer fitting should be replaced rather than kept.

Will a night guard cure my jaw pain?

It often reduces jaw muscle pain by protecting the teeth and easing overnight overload, but it manages the problem rather than curing it. Jaw pain has other causes too, so an examination comes first. Conservative care, such as rest and a soft diet, is tried before anything irreversible.

Do I need a night guard if I only clench lightly?

Not necessarily. If there is no visible wear, no sensitivity and no jaw pain, a dentist may simply watch your teeth at check-ups. A guard is worth having when you see chipping, flattening, sensitivity or a sore jaw on waking, or when you have expensive dental work to protect.
