Jaw and bite

Jaw Locking: Reasons and What to Do

Short answer

A jaw usually locks because the cushion disc in the joint has slipped, or because the jaw muscles have gone into spasm, often from clenching, grinding or stress. Injury, arthritis and infection are other causes. If the jaw is stuck and will not open or close, get care the same day.

Jaw locking reasons

The jaw joint has a small disc that cushions the movement. If the disc slips out of place it can block the joint, so the mouth will not open fully (locked closed) or will not close (locked open).

Muscle spasm from clenching, grinding or stress can stiffen the jaw in the same way. Other causes are a blow to the face, a very wide yawn, long dental visits with the mouth held open, arthritis of the joint, and infection near the jaw or wisdom teeth.

Grinding is a frequent contributor. See what bruxism is and how to stop teeth grinding.

What to do when your jaw is locked

Stay calm, as tension makes the muscles tighter. Apply a warm cloth to the side of the face, and try slow, gentle opening and closing without forcing. Do not push or wrench the jaw, and do not try to pull it into place.

If it is stuck and you cannot open or close your mouth, or it will not free up within a short time, get care the same day. Go to a hospital emergency department if you also have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if the jaw locked after a hard blow.

Fever, or swelling of the face or jaw with the stiffness, can mean infection and needs same-day care too.

Locking that comes and goes

Many people have a jaw that catches or sticks now and then, usually with clicking. Jaw clicking explains why. A soft diet, small bites, no wide yawning and jaw rest during flare-ups usually help.

If it keeps happening, see a dentist. They examine the joint and muscles, look at the bite and teeth, and may suggest a night guard, which is discussed in do I need a mouth guard for teeth grinding. The full list of causes is on the jaw pain page.

Common questions

Is a locked jaw an emergency?

A jaw that is stuck and will not open or close needs same-day care. Go to a hospital emergency department if you also cannot swallow or breathe comfortably, or after a hard blow to the face.

Can stress lock the jaw?

Stress can tighten the jaw muscles, especially with clenching or grinding, and that can make the jaw feel stuck or limit how wide it opens.

Why does my jaw lock when I yawn?

A wide yawn can push the joint beyond its usual range. If the disc is already out of place or the joint is loose, the jaw can catch or lock open. Get same-day care if it will not close.

Can a wisdom tooth make my jaw stiff?

Yes. An infected or inflamed wisdom tooth can make the muscles around it tighten, so the mouth opens only a little. Stiffness with swelling or fever needs same-day care.
