Before anything is bleached, the cheaper question has to be settled: is the problem surface stain or the underlying colour of the tooth? Stain from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan comes off with a scaling costing a fraction of whitening, and for a fair number of people that is the entire fix.
Whitening addresses the colour of the tooth itself. It is worth doing when the teeth are clean and still darker than you want, and it is money wasted when the actual problem was deposits.
Teeth Whitening Cost breakdown
| Item | Typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Scaling and polishing first | ₹800 – ₹2,500 | Removes surface stain. Sometimes the only step needed. |
| In-chair whitening, single session | ₹8,000 – ₹20,000 | 60 to 90 minutes, high-concentration gel under gum isolation. |
| Take-home custom trays with gel | ₹6,000 – ₹15,000 | Worn 1 to 2 weeks. Gentler on sensitivity, comparable result. |
| Combined in-chair plus take-home | ₹12,000 – ₹25,000 | In-chair for the jump, trays to finish and maintain. |
| Top-up gel refills | ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 | Once you have the trays, maintenance is inexpensive. |
| Internal bleaching, single dark tooth | ₹4,000 – ₹12,000 | For a tooth darkened by a dead nerve. Follows root canal treatment. |
| Veneers, where whitening cannot work | ₹4,000 – ₹25,000 per tooth | Tetracycline staining and severe fluorosis need masking, not bleaching. |

What moves the price
In-chair or take-home
In-chair uses a high-concentration gel with the gums isolated and produces a visible change in one appointment. Take-home trays use a lower concentration over one to two weeks and generally cause less sensitivity. The end results are broadly comparable; you are paying for speed and supervision.
How dark the starting shade is
Yellow tones respond well and quickly. Grey tones respond poorly. Discolouration built into the tooth from tetracycline or fluorosis barely responds at all, which is why an assessment before paying matters.
How many sessions
One in-chair session suits most people. Heavier staining may need two, or an in-chair session followed by take-home trays to finish, which changes the total.
Existing restorations
Crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten. If your front teeth carry restorations, whitening the natural teeth around them creates a mismatch, and correcting that means replacing them at ₹4,000 to ₹25,000 each. This is the single most important thing to establish before starting, not after.
Maintenance
Results last one to three years, driven almost entirely by tea, coffee, tobacco and paan. Take-home trays make top-ups cheap, which is a real argument for buying trays even if you start in the chair.
Before you compare quotes
Three ways a cheap quote gets cheap
Whitening sold before a scaling
If deposits and surface stain have not been removed, you are bleaching a dirty surface and paying ten times more than the cleaning would have cost. Scaling first, then decide.
Restorations not checked first
Existing crowns, veneers and front fillings will not change colour. Whitening around them without discussing it leaves you choosing between a mismatch and replacing them.
Unsupervised high-concentration gel
Gels bought online without custom trays and gum isolation cause chemical burns to the gums and unpredictable results. The isolation is most of what you pay a clinic for.
Teeth Whitening Cost in Lucknow: common questions
How much does teeth whitening cost?
In-chair whitening costs ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 at Lucknow market rates in 2026, and custom take-home trays with gel ₹6,000 to ₹15,000. A scaling and polish at ₹800 to ₹2,500 should come first, since removing surface stain often produces a visible improvement on its own.
Is in-chair or take-home whitening better value?
Take-home trays are usually better value, because the result is comparable, sensitivity is generally lower, and once you own the trays top-up gel costs ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 rather than a full session. In-chair buys speed and supervision, which matters if you have a date to be ready for.
How long does teeth whitening last?
One to three years, depending heavily on tea, coffee, tobacco and paan consumption. It is maintained rather than permanent, which is why take-home trays are worth having even if you start with an in-chair session.
Will whitening work on my crowns and fillings?
No. Restorative materials do not respond to peroxide. Whitening the natural teeth around existing front-tooth crowns, veneers or fillings leaves them mismatched, and the only fix is replacing them at ₹4,000 to ₹25,000 per tooth. Establish this before you start.
Does whitening damage enamel?
Professionally applied peroxide whitening does not remove or thin enamel; it breaks down pigment molecules chemically. Temporary sensitivity is common and settles within days. What does damage enamel is the DIY route, since charcoal powders and baking soda scrubs work by abrasion and lemon juice by acid.
