Routine scaling and polishing is the cheapest appointment in dentistry and the one with the best return, because almost everything expensive in a mouth begins as something that a cleaning and an examination would have caught.
The price only moves once the deposits have gone below the gum line. At that point you are no longer buying a cleaning, you are buying treatment for gum disease, and the figures separate accordingly.

What moves the price
How much deposit there is
Someone attending every six months has a short appointment. Someone attending after four years has hardened calculus that takes far longer to remove safely and may need a second visit.
Above or below the gum line
This is the real dividing line. Cleaning what is visible is scaling. Cleaning what has tracked down the root surface is root planing, it needs local anaesthetic, and it is charged per quadrant.
Whether gum disease has caused bone loss
Once supporting bone has been lost it does not return. Treatment shifts from cleaning to stabilising, sometimes surgically, and the cost rises with the stage.
Smoking and diabetes
Both worsen periodontal disease and both mean more frequent maintenance visits, typically three-monthly rather than six-monthly. That changes the annual cost, not the per-visit one.
Maintenance after treatment
Periodontal disease is controlled, not cured. Budget for recall cleanings indefinitely; they are what protect the money already spent.
