Bad breath and taste

Mouthwash for Bad Breath: Which Ingredients Help and What It Cannot Do

Short answer

Look for a mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride, zinc, chlorine dioxide or essential oils, which can reduce the bacteria that cause odour for a few hours. Choose an alcohol-free one if your mouth is dry. A mouthwash masks and reduces bad breath, but it does not treat the cause, such as the tongue coating, gum disease or decay.

What a mouthwash can and cannot do

A rinse reaches the surfaces of the mouth for under a minute. It can lower the number of odour-causing bacteria for a few hours and leave a fresh taste, but the source usually stays: the coating on the back of the tongue, plaque along the gums, deep gum pockets and decayed teeth. Our page on bad breath explains why those need cleaning, not covering.

Use a mouthwash as an extra after brushing, cleaning between the teeth and cleaning the tongue, not instead of them. Our guide on home remedies for bad breath covers the basics.

Ingredients to look for

Read the ingredients list on the pack, not the front label. Cetylpyridinium chloride is an antibacterial that reduces plaque bacteria. Zinc salts help neutralise the sulphur compounds that cause the smell. Chlorine dioxide also neutralises those compounds. Essential oil blends (thymol, eucalyptol, menthol) reduce bacteria but some can sting.

Chlorhexidine is a stronger antibacterial that a dentist may advise for a short course, for example after gum treatment. It can stain teeth and the tongue brown and change taste, so it is not for everyday use unless a dentist says so.

IngredientWhat it doesLimit
Cetylpyridinium chlorideReduces bacteria that form plaque and odourCan stain teeth slightly with long use; short-lived effect
ZincHelps neutralise smelly sulphur compoundsMetallic taste in some people; effect is short
Chlorine dioxideNeutralises sulphur compoundsShort-lived; does not clean the tongue
Essential oilsReduce bacteria; fresh tasteCan sting; some contain alcohol
ChlorhexidineStrong antibacterial, used in short coursesStains teeth, alters taste; use only when a dentist advises
FluorideProtects teeth against decayDoes little for odour on its own

Alcohol-free mouthwash for bad breath

Alcohol in a rinse can sting and dry the mouth. A dry mouth makes bad breath worse after the initial fresh feeling fades. If your mouth is often dry, choose an alcohol-free rinse, and see our page on dry mouth for other measures.

Do not swallow mouthwash, and do not give it to young children. Follow the directions on the pack for how much to use and how long to rinse. Do not rinse straight after brushing with fluoride toothpaste if you want the fluoride to stay on the teeth. Our guide on toothpaste for bad breath covers that side.

When mouthwash is hiding a problem

If you need a rinse several times a day to feel fresh, or the smell returns within an hour, something in the mouth is producing it. See a dentist, who can check the gums, teeth and tongue and clean what home care cannot reach.

A rinse that causes burning, white patches or soreness should be stopped and checked. A mouth ulcer or patch that does not heal in three weeks needs examination.

Common questions

Does mouthwash cure bad breath?

No. It reduces bacteria and the smell for a few hours, but it does not remove the cause. Cleaning the tongue and between the teeth, and treating gum disease or decay, does.

Is alcohol-free mouthwash better for bad breath?

For most people with a dry mouth, yes, because alcohol can dry the mouth further. It can still help with odour if it has an antibacterial ingredient.

Can I use chlorhexidine mouthwash every day?

Only when a dentist advises it, and usually for a short time. It can stain teeth and change taste.

When should I use mouthwash, before or after brushing?

After brushing and cleaning between the teeth is the usual routine. Wait a little after fluoride toothpaste, or use the rinse at a different time of day, so the fluoride stays on the teeth.
