What is in a toothpaste for sensitive teeth
Read the ingredient list rather than the front of the tube. Brand names change, but the active ingredients are few, and most sensitivity toothpastes contain one of them alongside fluoride. They fall into two groups: those that quiet the nerve, and those that plug the open channels in the dentine.
No single ingredient is right for everyone. If one type has not helped after a fair trial, trying a different ingredient is reasonable. A dentist can tell you which is likely to suit the cause of your sensitivity.
| Ingredient | How it works |
|---|---|
| Potassium nitrate | Settles the nerve so it reacts less to cold, heat and sweet. Builds up over a few weeks. |
| Stannous fluoride | Forms a layer over exposed dentine and seals the channels. Also protects against decay. |
| Arginine with calcium carbonate | Helps plug the channels with a mineral deposit that sits on the surface of the tooth. |
| Strontium salts | Block the openings of the channels in dentine. |
| Calcium sodium phosphosilicate | Releases calcium and phosphate that form a protective mineral layer over exposed dentine. |

How to use it so it actually works
Brush twice a day with a soft brush and a pea-sized amount, and spit out the foam without rinsing with water. Leaving a thin film on the teeth lets the active ingredient keep working. Do not eat or drink for a short while afterwards if you can.
For an especially sore tooth, smear a little paste on the exposed area with a clean fingertip before bed. Give it at least two to four weeks of daily use before judging it. Relief builds up slowly and stops if you switch back to an ordinary paste.
If sensitivity is coming from the way you brush or from acidic food, the toothpaste alone will not hold. Our guide on a natural remedy for sensitive teeth covers technique and habits, and the mouthwash for sensitive teeth guide covers rinses as a support.
Toothpaste for tooth pain: what it cannot do
A sensitivity toothpaste is for the brief, sharp zing from cold, hot or sweet. It is not a treatment for toothache. Pain that throbs, wakes you at night, lingers after a hot or cold drink, or comes with swelling is coming from decay, a crack or an infected nerve, and a paste cannot reach that.
If a tooth became sensitive after a filling, that is a separate and usually temporary issue; see our guide on sensitivity after a filling. For the wider picture of causes, the sensitive teeth page is the place to start.
If you have spreading swelling of the face, fever, or any difficulty swallowing or breathing, do not wait: seek care the same day, and go to a hospital emergency department if breathing or swallowing is affected.
Common questions
How long should I use toothpaste for sensitive teeth before it works?
Allow two to four weeks of twice-daily use. Some people feel a little relief within days, but the full effect builds slowly. If there is no change after a month, or one tooth is clearly worse than the rest, have it looked at.
Can I use sensitivity toothpaste all the time?
Yes. They are made for daily use and contain fluoride like ordinary toothpastes. Many people stay on them long term because the sensitivity returns when they stop. Check with a dentist if you also use another prescribed high-fluoride paste.
Does whitening toothpaste make sensitivity worse?
It can. Whitening pastes are often more abrasive or contain bleaching agents that irritate exposed dentine. If your teeth are sensitive, pause them and use a sensitivity paste for a while. Our guide on whitening toothpastes explains how they work and what to expect.
Can children use toothpaste for sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity in a child is unusual and should be checked by a dentist, because it can point to decay or a crack. Do not choose a product for a child on your own; follow the label and ask a dentist or paediatric dentist.
